This past Halloween I did a fairy tale theme. The dining room was Snow White's cottage and on our dining room table I had Snow White laying in the middle, the length of the table with an apple in her hand (it was a snow white dress and a skeleton underneath). The table was all done up with red table cloth and doily-like stuff strewn about.

That's the first thing I thought of when I read this thread. Have your food table be the table Franky is on...

I picture that room and several other 'lab' rooms. By using cheap rope (or thin 'weak' conduit) painted a dark dirty color, you can have those hanging from the walls and ceiling - stretched across the room - to mimic big heavy wires and cables (to handle the power from the lightning of course).
That idea is good to take up some space and make 'filler' on the walls and empty area of a room while still being right with the theme. I know when I gussy up the house for Halloween, there are several areas that are just... empty feeling -- maybe no pictures on the wall, or a blank corner.... when you look at a blank wall and blank ceiling, it can take away from the mood. By stringing up some rope --- bundle them together, then at a certain point have the bundle (say 4 ropes) go off in different directions - attach to the ceiling to make it look like it's going up, end a rope at the light switch, a few to the lamps, tables, etc --- your able to fill in space, inexpensively, while giving the guests the feeling that your entire place has been 'touched' by the theme.

EDIT: I also realize that suggestion has nothing to do with food or invites, but I have to get my ideas out in some way.
