I am at a decision point on my very first Halloween prop, Morti and your opinions would really be appreciated. A little about Morti... he started out as a real pumpkin left over from Fall 2007. He has been immortalized by using paper mache' and celluclay to form the head of a free-standing sculpture that will include a corpsed rib cage and vine-like tree trunk. The inside of the head is painted fluorescent orange and will be illuminated with a red light for an erie bright glowing affect. There is still a little bit of clay work to finish, mainly on the stem. Many thanks for the inspiration and encouragement for this project which I credit to my dear friend Spookzilla and the fabulous work of Lauriebeast.
I am pondering two options for the next step. Please help me choose!
Option 1: Do some finish sanding to leave a smooth surface and apply paint with an air brush for a shaded effect.
Option 2: Apply a layer of texture using a snot-rag mache' or similar tecnique to give him an overall corpsed effect before I paint with an airbrush.
Here are a few updated pictures of Morti. You will find more in my photo album.
Put him in a box and promptly send it to me for further investigation.
But seriously. With the look of the veins/vines (which is fantastic, by the way), I would have to go with the corpsing. Although, I would have a hard time touching that thing. He is quite beautiful the way he is.
I would hate to see you lose the smoothness of Morti. He is just fabulous, absolutely fabulous

Charlie Brown: Yes, I guess I have.
Linus: Well that is nothing compared to the fury of a woman who has been cheated out of tricks or treats!

You know I love you Rookie but I think you have enough unfinished projects at the moment. Morti will have to stay home....sorry!
First of all, I have to tell you that Morti looks incredible! I've always loved the look of a JOL with a very wide jagged smile! He's really perfect. I was thinking of buying one of those foam pumpkins to carve for this year, and Morti's face is going to be my inspiration!
Now, as for my vote, I don't think he should be perfectly smooth as to have a reflection of some sort. He should have some kind of texture, but then again, not so much texture that it looks flaky and a peeling look. My opinion is that the right answer is somewhere in the middle. I know that probably doesn't help, but I really like him as is, but painted of course. GREAT JOB!!!!
Madame Turlock,
Incredible!!!! I would vote to leave it smooth. It is awesome. GREAT JOB!

I would have to agree with Haunted Host. I think he needs some texture to make him look wrinkly and worn, but not so much that he looks all corpsey and falling apart. I also kind of like him the way he is, all smooth and white. There is definitely something cool and art deco about the smooth lines and high contrast between the white outside and darker inside.
